The air is fresh, and Mount Oldoinyo Lengai the sacred volcano of the Maasai slowly appears on the horizon as your guiding landmark for the day. You start early from Lake Natron, with Mount Oldoinyo Lengai towering behind you and the morning light reflecting off the mineral-rich flats of the lake. The first part of the ride is mostly flat, passing through dry savannah and volcanic terrain shaped by ancient lava flows.

As the day progresses, the route gradually begins to climb. The landscape slowly changes from arid plains to scattered acacia trees and cultivated areas. Maasai homesteads appear along the road, and friendly greetings from locals accompany you as you cycle through this remote region. The gravel road can be rough in places, with sandy sections that require steady pacing and good balance. The climb is long but manageable, rewarded with wide panoramic views across the Rift Valley floor and back toward Lake Natron.

Approaching Engaruka, the environment becomes noticeably greener. You cycle past small farms and irrigation channels, a reminder of Engaruka’s historical importance as an ancient agricultural settlement. The cooler air and fertile soils make this area a refreshing contrast to the heat of Natron. By afternoon, you arrive in Engaruka, where you can relax after the long ride, explore the village surroundings, and prepare for the next stage of your cycling journey. By early afternoon, you arrive in Mto wa Mbu, a vibrant settlement home to many different ethnic groups.
