After completing the paperwork at Londorossi Gate around 8:00–9:00 am, you’ll ascend to Shira (11,400 ft above sea level) and start your hike to Shira 1 Campsite. If you have more energy, you can extend your hike further. The round trip typically takes 2.5 to 4 hours.
You’ll be driven to the western side of the mountain, passing through lush tropical forests to reach Londorossi Gate at an altitude of 2,100m. The hike starts here, with a steady ascent of over 1,000m through montane forests rich with wildlife. With guidance from your expert guide, you may spot colobus monkeys, crested turacos, and other fascinating species. This less-visited side of Kilimanjaro is known for its tranquility and wildlife, including big game animals that cross from Kenya’s Amboseli National Park into Kilimanjaro National Park. Keep your ears tuned for the rumble of elephants and your eyes peeled—you might just catch sight of them moving through the trees.
