The Chaga are a Bantu-speaking indigenous ethnic group and the third-largest in Tanzania. They traditionally inhabit the southern and eastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in the Moshi region. Their relative prosperity stems from the area's favorable climate and advanced agricultural techniques, which include extensive irrigation systems, terracing, and organic fertilization methods practiced for centuries. As one of the first tribes in the region to adopt Christianity, the Chaga gained an early advantage in education and healthcare, giving them a socioeconomic edge over other ethnic groups. The Chaga people are descendants of various Bantu communities who migrated to the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro around the 11th century. Traditionally, the Chaga region was divided into several chiefdoms.
They follow a patrilineal system of descent and inheritance, and their lifestyle is deeply rooted in agriculture. Using terraced fields irrigated with skillfully managed water channels and fertilized with ox manure, they primarily cultivate bananas—their staple food. They also grow crops such as yams, beans, and maize. The Chaga are particularly known for producing high-quality Arabica coffee, which is exported to America and Europe.
