Note ;Yes, it is possible to cycle up Mount Kilimanjaro, but not entirely. Riding a mountain bike on Mount Kilimanjaro involves both cycling and pushing the bike in some steeper sections. Experienced bikers may be able to ride nearly to the summit at 5,895 meters, but for others, it is theoretically possible but would require excessive energy expenditure. It's important to conserve energy for the summit day.
Cyclists often find themselves pushing their bikes toward the summit, which is acceptable. However, based on our experience biking and pushing bikes on Mount Kilimanjaro, we recommend that tourists hire extra porters to assist with pushing the bike to the summit. To date, no cyclist has successfully ridden their bike all the way to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey typically involves a combination of cycling and carrying the bike in certain sections, with significant assistance from porters or guides.
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on foot can be challenging enough, but doing so on a mountain bike can be even more exhausting. Tourists will face various challenges on the ascent, but the descent can be a lot of fun. The cycling tour begins at Kilema Gate along the Kilema Route, which is known for its beauty and tranquility. This route is specifically designed for mountain biking and serves as an evacuation route from Horombo Hut in case of altitude sickness.
For tourists taking a five-day tour, cyclists will ride all the way up to Horombo Hut at an elevation of 3,720 meters. Here, cyclists will join regular climbers for an overnight stay. Expect to both ride and push your bike on steeper sections. Save energy for the summit day at 5,895 meters. Hiring extra porters is recommended for help with your bike. Climbing by bike can be more strenuous than climbing on foot. The tour starts at Kilema Gate and includes riding to Horombo Hut. This adventure combines physical exertion with breathtaking scenery, making it a unique experience for those willing to take on the challenge.

Today is both challenging and rewarding as you navigate the nearly vegetation-less plateau connecting Kilimanjaro’s two main summits, Kibo and Mawenzi. The terrain can be steep in places, but the effort is well worth it for your first breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s iconic “cones.” Upon arriving at Kibo Hut, cyclists and climbers should prioritize resting, hydrating, and mentally preparing for the summit attempt later that night.
After crossing the Maua River, you will ride through The Saddle, a stark and arid high-altitude desert nestled between the two peaks. This barren, dramatic landscape offers a unique perspective of Kilimanjaro’s grandeur. The day concludes at Kibo Huts, stone-built accommodations located at the base of Kibo’s summit. This critical day of preparation ensures you are acclimatized, energized, and ready for the midnight push to the summit.
DAY-5 : KIBO HUT TO UHURU PEAK
Starting elevation 4720m Kibo Hut
Ending elevation 5895M
Altitude change 1175m

Today is the most mentally and physically challenging part of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure as you ascend from Kibo Hut (4,720m) to the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). While riding your mountain bike is not feasible during the ascent, you will push your bike up to the peak, with some sections allowing for riding on the descent. This experience is a true test of endurance and determination, but reaching the top is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.
The trek begins at 12:00 AM (midnight), with the goal of summiting in the early morning to catch the breathtaking sunrise over the roof of Africa.
From Kibo Hut to Gilman’s Point (5,651m): The journey starts with a long and steep climb. This is one of the most challenging sections of the trek, requiring resilience and mental strength. Upon reaching Gilman’s Point, situated on the crater rim, the toughest part of the ascent is behind you. From Gilman’s Point to Stella Point (5,720m): Continue along the ridge to Stella Point, which serves as the junction for climbers approaching from the Barafu route. From Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m): The final stretch to Uhuru Peak is relatively easier and takes about 1-2 hours. Standing atop the highest free-standing mountain in the world, you’ll feel an incredible sense of accomplishment as you take in the awe-inspiring views.
Uhuru Peak to Kibo Hut: Descend via the same route to Kibo Hut, taking approximately 3-4 hours.Enjoy a short break and a well-deserved lunch at Kibo Hut. Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut: After lunch, continue the descent to Horombo Hut (3,720m). The trail will feel easier as you lose altitude, and you can enjoy the changing landscapes along the way.

After the exhilarating summit experience, you’ll return to Kibo Hut (4,720m) for a short break and a nourishing breakfast or lunch. Use this time to recharge, reflect on your achievement, and prepare for the descent. Once rested, you’ll collect and pack your belongings, ready to leave Kibo Hut for the next stage of the journey. Given the high altitude at Kibo Hut, staying too long can increase the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It’s recommended to spend no more than 1-2 hours before descending further to allow your body to acclimatize to lower altitudes.
You’ll cycle back to Horombo Huts (3,720m), where the air is fresher and more oxygen-rich. The ride will be relatively easier as the terrain becomes more forgiving, offering a welcome change after the challenging summit push. Once at Horombo Huts, you’ll have dinner and enjoy some well-deserved rest. This marks the end of a long and rewarding day, setting you up for the final stretch of your journey back to the base.
