After crossing the Maua River, you will ride through The Saddle, a stark and arid high-altitude desert nestled between the two peaks. This barren, dramatic landscape offers a unique perspective of Kilimanjaro’s grandeur. The day concludes at Kibo Huts, stone-built accommodations located at the base of Kibo’s summit. This critical day of preparation ensures you are acclimatized, energized, and ready for the midnight push to the summit.
DAY-5 : KIBO HUT TO UHURU PEAK
Starting elevation 4720m Kibo Hut
Ending elevation 5895M
Altitude change 1175m

total time to be used to uhuru peak 7.5hours
Today is the most mentally and physically challenging part of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure as you ascend from Kibo Hut (4,720m) to the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). While riding your mountain bike is not feasible during the ascent, you will push your bike up to the peak, with some sections allowing for riding on the descent. This experience is a true test of endurance and determination, but reaching the top is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.
The trek begins at 12:00 AM (midnight), with the goal of summiting in the early morning to catch the breathtaking sunrise over the roof of Africa.
From Kibo Hut to Gilman’s Point (5,651m): The journey starts with a long and steep climb. This is one of the most challenging sections of the trek, requiring resilience and mental strength. Upon reaching Gilman’s Point, situated on the crater rim, the toughest part of the ascent is behind you. From Gilman’s Point to Stella Point (5,720m): Continue along the ridge to Stella Point, which serves as the junction for climbers approaching from the Barafu route. From Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m): The final stretch to Uhuru Peak is relatively easier and takes about 1-2 hours. Standing atop the highest free-standing mountain in the world, you’ll feel an incredible sense of accomplishment as you take in the awe-inspiring views.
Uhuru Peak to Kibo Hut: Descend via the same route to Kibo Hut, taking approximately 3-4 hours.Enjoy a short break and a well-deserved lunch at Kibo Hut. Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut: After lunch, continue the descent to Horombo Hut (3,720m). The trail will feel easier as you lose altitude, and you can enjoy the changing landscapes along the way.
KIBO HUT TO HOROMBO HUT
Starting elevation 4720m Kibo Hut
Ending elevation 3720m Horombo Hut
Altitude change 1000m
Trekking distance 9kms
Cycling hours 2-3hours
Overnight hut Horombo Hut
After the exhilarating summit experience, you’ll return to Kibo Hut (4,720m) for a short break and a nourishing breakfast or lunch. Use this time to recharge, reflect on your achievement, and prepare for the descent. Once rested, you’ll collect and pack your belongings, ready to leave Kibo Hut for the next stage of the journey. Given the high altitude at Kibo Hut, staying too long can increase the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). It’s recommended to spend no more than 1-2 hours before descending further to allow your body to acclimatize to lower altitudes.
You’ll cycle back to Horombo Huts (3,720m), where the air is fresher and more oxygen-rich. The ride will be relatively easier as the terrain becomes more forgiving, offering a welcome change after the challenging summit push. Once at Horombo Huts, you’ll have dinner and enjoy some well-deserved rest. This marks the end of a long and rewarding day, setting you up for the final stretch of your journey back to the base.
