After breakfast, we’ll depart from Moshi and begin our cycling journey to Rau Forest, riding through the lush, green southern part of Moshi Town. Rau Forest is a unique and enchanting forest located just south of Moshi’s town center. This natural haven is home to a variety of wildlife, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, antelopes, warthogs, and dik-diks. It is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 100 bird species, including the common mother-of-pearl and gold-handed forester butterflies.
Additionally, the forest shelters diverse bees like Apis mellifera adansonii and stingless bees (Mellipolina), as well as the Forest Marsh Snake. Rau Forest is one of the few remaining groundwater forests in the region. The forest opens into an expansive rice field, where a man-made overlook provides a stunning view of the surrounding area. Within the forest, you’ll also encounter a magnificent ancient tree, steeped in local legend. According to lore, the tree is home to ancestral spirits. It is said that during the colonial era, an attempt to cut it down resulted in the tree mysteriously reappearing the following day, standing as tall as ever.
Materuni Waterfalls is a breathtaking natural wonder located just 15 kilometers from Moshi Town, making it a 1.5 to 2.5-hour cycling journey. This stunning waterfall, standing over 80 meters high, offers visitors the chance to enjoy its beauty up close. You can swim in the refreshing waters at its base, surrounded by lush vegetation, coffee plantations, and banana trees. Adventurous visitors can even stand beneath the cascading water or take a thrilling leap into the pool below.
During heavy rainfall, extra caution is advised while swimming near the waterfall. Avoid getting too close to the falls, as there is a small cave behind the cascade where someone could potentially get stuck. Additionally, the area is home to crabs, so extra care is necessary, especially for children. It’s best to enjoy swimming at a safe distance.
When paired with a coffee tour in the nearby village, visiting Materuni Waterfalls becomes a perfect day trip. After swimming and enjoying a lunch break in the scenic valley, you’ll explore an old Chagga cultural site and, depending on the season, a coffee plantation. Here, you’ll have the unique experience of roasting, brewing, and savoring your own fresh cup of coffee. For lunch, you can choose between a hot meal at the plantation or a picnic in the valley. Visiting Materuni Waterfalls is a remarkable adventure and an unforgettable way to spend a free day before or after your Kilimanjaro climb or wildlife safari.
Kikuletwa Hot Springs, also known as Chemka, derives its name from the Swahili word “chemka,” meaning "to boil," due to the bubbling effect created by underground caves feeding the spring. This incredible natural spring features turquoise-blue, crystal-clear waters with a depth of over 6 meters, inviting visitors to enjoy a refreshing swim. The pool is surrounded by a semi-arid landscape and shaded by a magnificent fig tree, creating a tranquil oasis.
Chemka Hot Springs is located near Moshi Town, in Rundugai Village, about 40 km between Moshi and Arusha. This destination is ideal for relaxation, especially after the challenges of a Kilimanjaro climb or a safari adventure. Spend a peaceful day at Chemka, enjoying the serene environment and refreshing waters. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, escape the city, and recharge before embarking on your next adventure. If you’re cycling, the round trip to and from Moshi covers approximately 80 km, making for an excellent day trip. Visitors typically return to Moshi in the evening, ready for their next tour activity or journey home.
