Authentic Maasai Cultural Experience:
The primary goal of visiting Olipopongi is to share the authentic Maasai way of life within a traditionally built village (Boma) that features a unique museum. Unlike other tours that may take visitors to private Maasai villages and disrupt their native homes and traditions, our eco-tourism approach respects the Maasai tribe and aims to educate clients about their culture.
The Maasai are traditional, semi-nomadic pastoralists in East Africa. Their migration history dates back to the 1550s when they moved down the Nile from Sudan and Egypt, bringing agricultural and cattle-breeding knowledge. The peak of this migrational wave occurred during the 18th century when the Maasai were often viewed as "wild barbarians." Despite facing challenges over the years, including significant reductions in livestock numbers from an average of 26 to just 5 per person by the 1960s, the Maasai have maintained their cultural identity and practices.
