Mkomazi National Park is situated in the northeastern part of Tanzania, along the Kenyan border, spanning the Kilimanjaro and Tanga Regions. The park is primarily characterized by Acacia-Commiphora vegetation and is contiguous with Kenya's Tsavo West National Park. The area known as 'Mkomazi' actually comprises the union of two former game reserves: the Umba Game Reserve in the east (located in Lushoto District, Tanga Region) and the Mkomazi Game Reserve in the west (in Same District, Kilimanjaro Region).
Mkomazi National Park is a stunning wilderness area, offering views of Mount Kilimanjaro to the northwest, while the Pare and Usambara Mountains create a dramatic backdrop to the south. To the north, it shares a border with Kenya's expansive Tsavo National Park, facilitating migratory herds of elephants, oryx, and zebras during the wet season. Together with Tsavo, Mkomazi forms one of the largest and most significant protected ecosystems on Earth. The park represents the southern tip of the Sahel zone and features classic dry-country landscapes filled with grey-green nyika bush, ancient baobab trees, and isolated rocky hills. In other areas, dense bushland transitions into open savannah woodlands dominated by umbrella acacias and mbugas—shallow valleys of grassland.
Wildlife in Mkomazi is typical of arid regions. The park hosts giraffes, oryx, gerenuks, hartebeests, lesser kudus, elands, impalas, and Grant's gazelles alongside elephants, buffaloes, and various predators including lions, black rhinoceroses, leopards, and cheetahs. A total of 78 mammal species have been recorded in the park. Birdwatchers will find Mkomazi particularly rewarding as well, with over 400 bird species documented, including numerous doves, hornbills, weavers, guinea fowl, and striking species like the martial eagle.
Visitors can book one-day safari tours to Mkomazi that include a picnic lunch inside or near the park followed by an afternoon game drive to observe elephants, black rhinoceroses, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles among others. In the late afternoon, guests will return to Moshi or Arusha to conclude their safari adventure at their hotels. For those who book multi-day safaris, transfers will be arranged to nearby hotels or lodges in preparation for subsequent days of exploration.
