Tarangire National Park is a national park located in Tanzania's Manyara Region. The park derives its name from the Tarangire River, which flows through it and serves as the primary source of fresh water for wildlife during the annual dry season. The Tarangire Ecosystem is characterized by the long-distance migration of wildebeest and zebras, and during the dry season, thousands of animals migrate to Tarangire National Park from surrounding wet-season dispersal and calving areas. The landscape features granitic ridges, river valleys, and swamps, with vegetation comprising Acacia woodland, Combretum woodland, seasonally flooded grasslands, and iconic baobab trees.
Located just a few hours' drive from Moshi, Tarangire is a popular stop for travelers on the northern safari circuit heading to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. The park extends into two game-controlled areas, allowing wildlife to move freely. Tarangire National Park is renowned for its high density of elephants and baobab trees. Visitors during the dry season (June to November) can expect to see large herds of thousands of zebras, wildebeests, and Cape buffaloes. Other common resident animals include waterbuck, giraffe, dik-dik, impala, eland, Grant's gazelle, vervet monkeys, banded mongooses, and olive baboons. Predators in Tarangire include lions, leopards, cheetahs, caracals, honey badgers, and African wild dogs. Notably, Tarangire is home to the oldest known elephant to give birth to twins.
The park is a haven for bird enthusiasts, boasting over 550 recorded bird species. It is also famous for its termite mounds, which often serve as homes for dwarf mongooses. In 2015, a leucistic giraffe was spotted in the park. Wildlife research primarily focuses on African bush elephants and Masai giraffes. Tarangire's pythons can be seen climbing trees alongside lions and leopards that lounge in branches where sausage tree fruits disguise their movements.
