Lake Manyara is the seventh-largest lake in Tanzania by surface area, located in the northern part of the country within the Manyara Region. This shallow alkaline lake features a northwest quadrant that is included within Lake Manyara National Park, which is part of the Lake Manyara Biosphere Reserve. Lake Manyara National Park is renowned for its flocks of thousands of flamingos that feed along the lake's edge during the wet season. At times, there have been over an estimated 2 million individuals of various species of water birds present.
The park is also famous for its unique tree-climbing lions, which are a rare sight and make their homes in ancient mahogany and elegant acacia trees during the rainy season. In addition to these lions, Lake Manyara National Park boasts the largest concentration of baboons in the world, providing excellent opportunities for observing large families of these primates. From the nearby town of Mto wa Mbu, visitors can organize canoe trips on the lake or fishing excursions to learn traditional fishing methods. Bicycle rides to the eastern shore of the lake can also be arranged. Lake Manyara National Park can be booked for one-day safaris.
For a one-day trip, guests will enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park or nearby, followed by an afternoon game drive to observe wildlife and bird migrations at Lake Manyara.
