Ngorongoro Conservation Area: A World Heritage Site and Natural Wonder. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is situated 260 km west of Moshi in Tanzania’s Crater Highlands. Named after the iconic Ngorongoro Crater, this area features one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world. Formed approximately 2.5 million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed after a major eruption, the crater remains a vast, unbroken marvel of nature.
The crater floor is predominantly open grassland, serving as a haven for diverse wildlife. It is home to elephants, black rhinoceroses, leopards, buffalo, zebras, warthogs, wildebeests, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, and boasts the densest lion population in the world. The local Maasai people also graze their livestock in the crater. Adding to its allure, Lake Magadi, a shallow soda lake surrounded by extinct volcanoes, hosts spectacular flocks of pink flamingos.
Additionally: The Ngorongoro Conservation Area encompasses the Olduvai Gorge, located in the plains region. This site is significant as it has yielded some of the earliest known specimens of the human genus, including Homo habilis, as well as early hominids like Paranthropus boisei. Olduvai Gorge extends about 50 kilometers in length and lies in the rain shadow of the Ngorongoro highlands, making it the driest part of the region.
The Ngorongoro Crater also plays a vital role in Maasai cultural tourism. It may come as a surprise that the Ngorongoro Conservation Area was established to preserve the environment for the Maasai people, who were displaced from the Serengeti Plains. Traditionally nomadic, they constructed temporary villages in circular homesteads known as bomas. Visitors can observe how these huts are built in a strict sequence according to the chronological order of the wives and experience life relying on warmth and energy from a fire at the center of a dwelling made from cattle dung. The proud cattle-herding Maasai have a rich history as warriors; although they can no longer build villages inside the conservation area, they continue to herd their cattle into the crater for grazing and drinking despite the presence of nearby predators.
